Global warming

This module provides a collection of videos and exercises connected with the issue of global warming.

Watch the National Geographic video which provides a good introduction to the subject.

The next two videos show us how we can combat the climate change. The Kurzgesagt video presents us with down-to-earth solutions on how we can avert the climate doom, whereas the other one presents an innovation in the area of solar energy.

Task 1

Answer the questions according to the information given in the film ”What If the Sahara
Desert Was Covered With Solar Panels?”.

1. What area of Sahara desert would we have to cover with solar panels to create
power for the entire world?
2. What are the difficulties of creating giant solar farms on a desert?
3. Why would making a solar farm in the Sahara desert cause more plants to grow on
the desert?
4. What are the advantages of creating solar farms on a desert?

The artistic voice

The issue of global warming is also present in the world of arts.

Andrew Bird’s ”Manifest” touches upon the issue of climate change and our ignorance of the problem.

Task 2

Listen to the song and fill in the blanks.

I’m coming to the edge of the ______ canyon
My companions’ dear
I’m starting to question my ______ destiny
My claim to this frontier
I’m coming to the ______ of a great disaster
The end just has to be near
The Earth spins faster, whistles right past you
________ death in your ear
Don’t pretend you can’t hear
Don’t pretend you can’t
I can hear your _______ still digging
For everything that’s walked this Earth once living
Then to be ________ and burned to ______
Can you save her?
Now she’s in the air
________ and free
Neither here nor there
She’s obliged to no one
She’s obliged to no one
Yeah, yeah
I’m coming to the edge of a rising ocean
Such _________ and fear
Keeping all our eyes on what’s on the horizon
And all that we hold dear
I’m coming to the brink of a great disaster
End just has to be near
The Earth spins faster, whistles right past you
Whispers death in your ear
Don’t pretend you can’t hear
Don’t pretend you can’t
I can hear your tendrils still digging
For everything that’s walked this Earth once living
Then to be exhumed and burned to vapor
Can you save her?
She’s in the air
Radical and free
Not a ________ care
She’s obliged to no one
She’s obliged to no one
Oh, no

The following video is an excerpt from the Q&A session with Jordan Peterson.
